Socrates (ca. Lifelong learning and social skills are given paramount importance. Students must experience and take decisions about actual social problems in order to develop a social awareness and overcome oppression. Studies suggest that students learn remarkably well when their involvement in the learning process is very pronounced.
For example, philosophers of education study what constitutes upbringing and education, the values and norms revealed through upbringing and educational practices, the limits and legitimization of education as an academic discipline, and the relation between educational theory and practice. Philosophy of education has a long and distinguished history in the Western philosophical tradition, from Socrates’ battles with the sophists to the present day. Study in the Philosophy of Education Program is oriented toward a critical understanding of broad conceptual and normative issues in education and the human service professions.
